Heart of the University

Libraries

Many aspects of library collections and services have changed in the past decade, but the role of the library in higher education has not diminished. Today, libraries remain at the very center of the academic mission of the University. The libraries provide the information resources, the technology, and the training students need to excel in the competitive academic environment that is a 21st century research institution.

With increased support, the libraries can ensure that graduating students have the skills and understanding needed to continue a lifelong search for knowledge necessary to be successful. Reaching the libraries' goal of $5.5 million will allow us to enhance and increase the services and resources we offer current students and the many new students enrolling in the near future.

The rapidly increasing enrollment adds an element of urgency in our need to address the rising demands for library resources and services. Campaign support will ensure that student needs can be addressed in the areas of improved study space, technology-driven learning and research, and books and electronic data. Finally, the libraries will have the opportunity to reveal the treasures hidden in our W. S. Hoole Special Collections Library by presenting them in digital form on our website.

"I don't think it is a coincidence that the Gorgas Library is located in the center of campus. Our libraries represent the very heart of the University and provide the lifeblood of every student's academic experience."

Calvin Brown, Campaign Steering Committee Chair

"The University Libraries remain the intellectual center of the University. They ensure that our students are indeed our future. On campus the Libraries provide extensive support for students seeking collaborative work space, computer facilities, and print collections. More than ever, it is correct to say, “No one ever graduated from a library, but no one ever graduated without one."

Dr. Lou Pitschmann, Dean
