Leading the Way
In 2004 as “Our Students. Our Future.” began its silent phase, a group of important volunteers began their work. A 60-member national steering committee of key university alumni, friends and donors came together to serve as volunteer leadership for the largest capital campaign in the University’s history.
“When we asked these individuals to be part of the steering committee, we asked them to do three things,” said Dr. Pam Parker, vice president for advancement. “We asked that they make a commitment to the campaign, attend campaign steering committee meetings and help identify three individuals who were capable of making a gift to the campaign.”
Steering committee members were called on throughout the campaign to provide support, knowledge and assistance to university staff at all levels. “The members of the steering committee have helped us in many ways — some in the beginning and some who have helped as we got into the campaign,” Parker continued. “When you run a campaign over five years, you ask a lot of your volunteer leadership. The success of the campaign would not have happened without them.”
It looks as though the steering committee has fulfilled much of their obligation as the campaign recently rolled past the $452 million mark. As the campaign nears its finish line, 98 percent of the steering committee members have made a gift and their contributions add up to nearly $19 million. Of that total, $3.8 million is dedicated to student scholarships.
“We truly couldn’t have asked for a steering committee any better than this one,” Parker said. “What they have given and done for the University is overwhelming. It’s been a gift to work with them.”
